| Sooo...ok she was on a low dose fertility drug? So are these babies not all “identical” twins (yes I know they’re sextuplets) - but were they all their own egg first? I’m just confused by this. |

I have never seen the show, but if half of them are boys and half of them are girls, they are not identical. There must have been at least 2 eggs. |

People with high-order multiples (Kate Gosselin, Danielle Busby, the lady on this show) often are using a very basic infertility drug that causes superovulation, growing more than the usual one or two follicles/eggs a woman typically has during her cycle. It’s provided to women who either can’t ovulate on their own, ovulate sporadically, or want to up the chances of having more than one viable follicle or egg during a specific cycle. It is often a first step before trying more invasive procedures (IUI and then IVF). You take the medication and then have intercourse during your fertile days. Good fertility doctors will monitor a woman taking these drugs during her cycle, to make sure there are not three or four or five or more follicles releasing eggs, so when the woman has intercourse and if she gets pregnant, she’s not pregnant with three or four or five or more babies. However, a lot of doctors, including the first fertility specialist I saw and never saw again, will suggest a woman take the drugs for a cycle without any monitoring. So you could be prescribed the medication without any further follow up, and have sex not knowing how many potential follicles and eggs are waiting to be inseminated. A lot of women do this, and that’s when you can wind up with triplets or higher order multiples. My guess is that this is what the woman on the show did, since none of the six children are twins, meaning there were six separate eggs that were fertilize, and none of the eggs split into twins. If she was monitored by a doctor who saw that she was going to have six follicles/eggs in a cycle, she would be instructed to cancel the cycle and not have intercourse at the risk of winding up with six children. |
