At what age did you leave your responsible kid home alone for half an hour? A full hour?
I’ve left my kid home alone while I walk the dog but still in sight line of the house so that doesn’t count but I’m tempted to try it so he can sleep in if he wants while I take his sibling to art class. |
9. That’s when DD said she was ready and we found a good opportunity. |
Seven. |
Illegal but you do you. |
Consider that not everyone lives where you live. Also, I'm sure you never speed while driving. That's illegal, but you do you. |
8. Just make sure the child knows ahead of time and that they have a way to contact you |
Just did this yesterday with my 8 and 7 year old for the first time. I was two streets away helping install a window AC for a neighbor. They had a cell phone and I made them recite all emergency procedures and rules for staying home.

Jokes about kids potentially dying are hilarious. |
Wrong. My state, and most states, have no age minimum https://www.workingmother.com/when-can-you-leave-your-kids-home-alone |
I thought he was ready at 8. He didn’t feel comfortable until 9. The younger one is 8 now but I don’t think he’s ready yet. |
8. |
Agree with 8 for half hour. |
Older one was just shy of 9. He is very responsible but he is also a bit anxious so I may have been ready earlier but he did not seem to be. Younger one is 7.5 and have not left him yet but probably will right around when he turns 8. |
I’m in MD where it’s legal to leave an 8 year old home alone. I would start with like 20-30 minutes and think he would be fine, but we have a 15 yo dog who can’t be crated or separated from people when we’re home. The majority of the time he just sleeps, but I feel like it’s a little different leaving an 8 year old home alone by himself and an 8 year old home alone while responsible for a dog. Do you think this makes a difference? |
I think 9 is a good age, but at that age my DD was afraid to be alone in the house. By 10 she was OK with me being gone about 20 to go for a walk. By 11 she was coming home after school in middle school and alone staying there for an hour before I got home. |
