Those of you whose kids got h1n1 AFTER vaccination

Anonymous
When did it happen and was it mild? (a few days vs. week, were meds needed, etc)
I have heard of so many people contracting it after vaccination that I'm wondering if the shot actually is lowering the immune system temporarily and allowing easier contraction of it?

My 5 year old son caught H1N1 5/6 days after his vaccination (shot, not mist). It must have been going around his kindergarten class, as several of his unvaccinated friends also caught it within a few days of each other.
My 8 year old daughter recieved the vaccine the same day as my son, and did not get H1N1, despite sharing drinks and spending plenty of time playing together the day before he spiked the fever. (which is supposed to be one of the most contagious days)

I would say my son's illness was middle-of-the-road. He was put on tamiflu at Urgent Care when he was diagnosed about 30 hours after the fever started, and he maintained a fever of 102-104 for 6 days, but he did not have any respiratory complications. His other symptoms included leg and arm pain and weakness, headach, a mild chesty cough, and he complained that his eyes hurt when his fever would get really high.

My husband had not been vaccinated and caught H1N1 from my son. He was also placed on tamiflu immediately, but he had a rougher course that my son. In addition to the high fever, my husband had trouble with constant coughing and a few days later chest pain and trouble breathing. Numerous x-rays revealed that the air sacs around his lungs had collapsed, and he was given a series of breathing treatments and prescribed steroid inhalers. He is doing well, but still tires easily.

Personally,
I don't think that the vaccine is lowering the immune response and allowing kids to catch it. I just think that it is so widespread in the DC area right now that it is hard to avoid while you wait for the vaccine to start producing antibodies. My son had a longer, milder illness and my husband had a shorter, rougher illness. My vaccinated, yet not yet immune daughter with asthma (who is usually the first to get sick) avoided it altogether, as did I since I was vaccinated several weeks before all of this began.
It seems like the luck of the draw to me!

My child got the shot, less than 4 days later he got the flu, don't know which one, presume h1n1.

Due to my child's special needs he was put on Tamiflu about 30 hrs after first sign of fever. Had fever 4 days, not a happy kid 6 days. He had longer term problems with muscle weekness for 2-3 weeks after, but that is probably because my kid has hypotonia. Went back to preschool after 8 days. He is fine now. They gave him a little extra help in school while he was building up his muscle strength.
