I have been teaching some basics of tech use to a very wealthy lady. She had a MacBook, spilled some liquid on it, got overwhelmed with options for repair and just bought a new one. She gave me the old one. I took it to both Apple store and an off brand repair shop and they both quote exorbitant prices for repair.
Do I just take the laptop to a recycling facility? Or will I be able to find a buyer on CL or elsewhere? And if I sell it, will her info be somehow compromised? And how do I make sure I am not accused of selling stolen property or anything? I know these are noob questions but I have only been a user until now....never had to deal with repairs. |
What did she use it for previously? If a lot of sensitive data is on it, you should crack it open and remove the hard drive. If not, don’t worry about it. I think she can login to her apple account though and “deregister” the device so that if some did later get it running, they wouldn’t be able to access it using her Apple ID. |
She used it for email so there is some degree of sensitivity involved (also Skype and YouTube and stuff like that). I think if she deregisters it it should take care of it (I think she has her initial password disabled but hopefully it is all on iCloud) But will I be able to sell it? Because if not I would rather just bring it back to her and have her relatives deal with it. |
Who will buy it? Repairs are $$$$. And identity theft is a real possibility— why be on the hook for that.
Give it back |
Take it to a recycling place that will destroy the hard drive. |
Modern MacBooks have solid state drives soldered to the motherboard. You might not be able to remove the hard drive.
If it is new enough, it is worth fixing. Consider these guys: https://rossmanngroup.com/shipping/ |
OP here, thanks all, I will just take recycle it at Apple store!
