Board games to play over Skype/Facetime

Anonymous
My 9 year old son is currently in the hospital out of state. It looks like he'll be there a while. He's been playing chess with his brothers at home via Skype, but they're hopelessly mismatched (hospitalized kid is wickedly smart and has had lots of time stuck in bed to practice!), so it's not as much fun as it could be. Any ideas for new games for them to play? Chess works well, because we just set up 2 boards, one on each end and move both pieces.

My kids at home might appreciate it if there was an element of luck, so they have some hope of winning! Kids at home are also 9, and 12.

OP here, we have that at home, and enjoyed it when the kids were younger, but I don't think it would hold the older two's interest anymore.

If they are on the computer I'd just find multipler online games - much easier.

Do you have suggestions? Are there games where they'd be able to see each other, and just play each other and not also play strangers at the same time? I don't know much about online games, but that doesn't mean we couldn't try.

Also, my middle kid doesn't have a lot of stamina right now, so one of the advantages of chess is that you can start, take a break and catch your breath or take a nap, and then come back and play some more. So, a multiplayer game that allowed that stop/start would be good.

I’m glad. Sorry about your son. With a little effort, stratego could work too.

OP here. We've never played that one, but if it works like I think it does it might be too much talking for right now, but I can definitely put the idea away for the future, because it seems like fun.

Good idea! I will look into that. We could probably label the board like a chess board so the person on the other end would know what to move.
