can I call my apple watch from my own iPhone?

I'd like to be able to leave my phone at home if I'm going out to run a short errand so that my kids could call me. I have a series 3 apple watch that has full phone call, text ability. But I can't figure out if I can use my own number to call it. It just goes to my voicemail when I try it.

I think I'm out of luck, but has anyone figured this out? I had thought this would be a good solution to not have to have my kids have a phone yet but be able to leave them at home for short periods of time.
