DS is allergic to eggs. Reading through what I could in the medical literature, I gathered that most kids and adults that are allergic to eggs (even with extremely severe allergies) do not react to the vaccine or hardly. Based on these evidence, the CDC is actually rethinking their recommendations regarding flu vaccines for people with egg allergies.
The vaccine needs to be done at the office of an allergist to test for reactions first and just in case.... We went last week and they first tested contact with the vaccine, then a scratch test in his back, then a small quantity below the skin then did the vaccine. Each time they would monitor him for 1/2 hour for a reaction and would have stopped if there was any. They kept a second dose for us to be delivered in 28 days without a need for retesting. This was also the experience of another friend of mine whose kid is also allergic to eggs. I just wanted to pass this information along if it could be useful to any parent. |
| We had the same experience with our daughter. Seasonal flu vaccines this year and last (last year done as described above) plus both doses of H1N1 this year and she's been fine. |
