Likelihood of lice?

Anonymous
I'm new to the lice scene. I've never had it and spouse has never had it. Kids have never had it (4 and 1 years old). Got a letter today that a child in the 4 year old's room has lice. When you get these notifications, anecdotally, what's the likelihood that it's going to spread? Usually? Almost never?

I've been itching all day just thinking about it.

Get a lice comb and start doing regular comb-outs at bath time when conditioner is in hair. This is the #1 way to prevent it. Also if They have long hair, have them wear their hair up in ponytails, braids, or buns. And talk to them about never sharing hats, combs, headbands, or anything else that goes in the hair.

Unless your child has incredibly short hair, the chances are very high the will get it in the next few weeks. Get prepared with a metal comb and dimethicone treatment on hand. Keep checking for nits. For the first case they can have lice for a few weeks before they start itching, so you need to be checking.

OP, lice comes back because parents are too lazy to get it all out. Keep your child's hair up, and pay attention to what is written above.

My boys both have longish (to the collar) hair that they wear down, not up. They both have baby fine hair still, which is supposedly unpreferred by lice compared to coarser hair. There has been lice in their class several times, including a BF. Never gotten it.

The chances are not 100%.

Make sure someone is checking you too.

I feel like it varies by kid. We have received those type letters a couple times and my DD has never gotten lice although she has a friend who seems to always get it. Maybe those parents just aren't getting rid of it. The spread seemed to slow down a lot when she got to K and stopped having naps so no nap cots and pillows and blankets all getting stored together.

Increases for girls as they get older and start into the putting their heads together for selfies.

I don't think it is likely. We get that letter at least once per year and my kids haven't had it. Trying to comb through their hair with a fine lice comb every week like people suggest as routine is overkill IMO. Check once and then maybe again in another week and then be done with it

My DD had it 2x and no one else in the house got it even after I used the same brush on both kids the day we found out.

OP - do a search on DCUM for "lice lady" - she did an AMA and it had the most helpful advice I've read. If you don't have time, then what the first person who responded said is the gist of it (comb daily with conditioner in the hair). And comb regularly (weekly/monthly/whatever) just in case. I try to do monthly, and this summer since older DD is in an outdoor camp for the next 8 weeks, I'll probably do it weekly. I don't let my DDs wear their hair down to school (braids or pony/pigtails) and I think that has probably helped them to avoid it.

I'd say the odds are moderate. We've gotten a couple of those letters and my kid never got lice. I would do some extra checks, and make more of an effort to put her hair in ponytails/pigtails/braids/buns, but otherwise nothing special.
