New public chartered school in Takoma DC?

Anonymous
I have heard that there is going to be a new public chartered school at New Hampshire Ave and Peabody street in the NE section of Takoma DC. Does anyone have any information on the school?

Interesting rumor as there is a moratorium on new charter schools (they offer The Rhee too much competition and we can't have that). Perhaps it is an expansion or new location for a current charter? Do you have anything more than a rumor to go on?

I spoke with the Public Charter School Board earlier this fall to ask what new (if any) Charter Schools might be opening for the next school year. At that time, since the application process was not open yet they had no information.

On November 2nd, they released the 2010 application guidance so they might have more information now.

I found them very responsive - call them at: 202.328.2660

it's possible, but i am not positive, that capital city might locate their upper school in this location?

If true, that's a new campus, but not a new school.

I was told that it will be a totally NEW chartered school. I wasn't able to get any info - name, grades, etc. Hopefully, I will be able to learn more about it in the near future.....lets see..that would make 6 schools within a 4 block radius.....and that is not including the ones across Blair Road.

Ok, so I was at the community meeting last night and the representatives from this "NEW" school was there. They are proposing a residential boarding academy and residential facility for girls and young women ages 12 to 22. They will provide a therapeutically safe and academically sound learning environment" That is what their "MEDIA ADVISORY states. It called Emani's place. The trade name of the business is Village Academy of DC. Apparently there is another Village Academy at 680 Rhode Island Ave (not sure if that is residential) They are proposing a residential treatment center for troubled girls!! In addition it will serve as a daycare for those girls who have children..
Apparently the space isn't zone for this type of business.
Per their application the behavioral problems includes (but not limited to-steals, Identity Issues, Alcohol/drug abuse, arson, cruelty to animals, destroys property, sexually acts out, sexual provocative.

If I were you I'd register my negative opinion with as many councilmembers as possible. After all, there are plenty of existing charter schools which need the space and the Fenty administration (in defiance of DC law which is supposed to give 1st preference to charter schools for all unoccupied schools) isn't following the law. Don't let them stick you with a cluster of "troubled girls" (and other delinquents - since when do "troubled girls" not have even more "troubled boys" as their boyfriends?) which will negatively impact your property values. (BTW, you might want to mention your displeasure vis-a-vis the "troubled teens" and the general safety of your neighborhood (not to mention the play opportunities of your child/children!) Tell them you want AN ELEMENTARY PROGRAM. Tell them you want AN ACADEMICALLY RIGOROUS PROGRAM! Weed out the trouble-makers at any and all possible opportunities, as early as you possibly can.

Because otherwise the Rhee/Fenty machine will MOW YOU DOWN (they'd love nothing better than to put a scary charter in an up-and-coming DC neighborhood in a misguided attempt to frighten you into DCPS). Don't believe me? Look what Rhee just did to Hardy MS.

It needs to get past the Charter Board - anyone know if it has a chance ?

It is proposed as a PRIVATE school. Not a chartered school. Origianlly they tried to go under the chartered umbrella but was disapproved. So...they are a PRIVATE organization.

Troubled girls who can afford private school? Doubt it. Ergo, sounds like an organization with deep pockets. Lots of people are happy to donate to charitable organizations - as long as the charity cases don't end up in their own neighborhoods. They'd rather put them in yours.

they are private and receive funds from DCPS and other locations. DC VILLAGE
