I'm having a hard time believing most nannies make 20-30/hr for one kid. Is this for real or are people replying as a joke to these nanny search ads?

where are you posting? Craigslist? |
Oh no, on DCUM. Should've been more specific. It wasn't my post. Just a post I saw. |
OP, there's a lot of threads on this. Do a search, and you'll find that some people feel those 20-30$/hr prices for a FT nanny with overtime and benefits are inflated. There are a lot of vocal nannies who believe that anyone making under 20$/hr could not possibly be a nanny. Check care.com, your local listserv and with local parents. |
Why? Bc you can not afford to pay that? No one is forcing anyone to pay more than they can afford. Yes, some nannies make $20-$30/hr for one kid. Some nannies make $18-$20 and others make $15/hr. The responses you posted lead me to believe those nannies are desperate and English isn’t their first language. They are more inclined to take what they can get. Nannies making $20-$30 are usually able to be more selective and have more offers. |
Native fluency in English isn't a requirement to have a good nanny. Shame on you OP for sharing those posts and linking the worth of the nanny with the quality of their English. |
Ugh! Yes, it is real! Like any occupation, there are those with experience, education, special skills and talents that command more money.
As I have posted before, our nanny makes $28 an hour for one child. We wanted an educated (she has a masters degree in ECD), experiences (10 plus years), former preschool teacher who speaks impeccable English and rudimentary French. She is also an amazing, loving, devoted nanny. My best friend pays $22 an hour for a wonderful, loving and hardworking nanny who speaks broken English and fluent Spanish. She works off the books which is not an option for us. |
Perfect English and a good vocabulary IS a requirement for us. If you don’t care about that - fine. |
When we hired our nanny seven years ago, we paid $15 an hour. Fully bilingual and no nanny experience. We've given a $1 per year raise, and also gave a $1 raise when we had a second child. |
Agreed. I would be suspicious of the postings in the OP. |
Wow, an extra dollar for a newborn. |
The nanny forums are filled with nannies who are fixated on their wage and post constantly with inflated numbers.
Compensation is important. But if all you care about is how much money you make, you’re in the wrong job. |
+1 |
So then you don’t work or you work for free? |
+1. Fixated?! Yes, because nannies don’t have mortgages or rent or need healthcare insurance or food! |
