Phillips School

Anyone have experience with this School?

I have toured it and know other families who have been referred to it. My impression is that its a school of last resort for FCPS at least (and probably other counties)--when the other private day schools like Ivymount and Lab who contract with FCPS won't take a child, Phillips is the catch-all so they can say they offered something. The families I know who were suggested Phillips by Fairfax all had children with wildly different educational needs.

My concern with that school is they have quite a few students who are behaviorally challenging and violent. If my child needed an alternative school setting but did not have issues with aggression, I would be reluctant to send my child there. It would help to get more information about your situation OP in order to provide more helpful feedback. The fact that you are considering this school probably means you are in desperate need for help with your child and that's a tough situation for any family.

I toured it. Was shocked that they had a seclusion closet. That’s not best practices and it made me wonder what else they do that is counterproductive or not evidence based.

This is true.

What are the issues, OP? I have seen several of the contract schools. You won't be outing yourself because IME FCPS sends every family with private placement to tour it.

I'm actually not in FCPS which obviously speaks to a not good situation with my child. PP who is familiar with this school, are there other better options that you would recommend for a complex child?

Thank you.

What are your child’s primary struggles?

What do you think your child needs to be successful?

What other schools did your school system suggest you tour?

Ridge School, The Children's Guild, Accotink

I have never heard of Ridge school.

Have you looked at Alternate Paths in Alexandria? I would go there over Phillips.

They didn’t send you to look at Frost in Rockville? Everyone I know who toured Phillips was also offered Frost. That’s all I know about it but maybe it will work for you.

I would also ask to tour the Kennedy Krieger program which I think is in silver spring? At least that institution has a good reputation.

What is wrong with Phllips?

We were sent to Frost but they wouldn't take us because Frost is a diploma only program and my child is currently on a certificate track.
