obvious adv is not having to worry about getting into a med school. i would not recommend though. 18 y.o. is too young to have a firm idea on what they want to do in life. don't do it for $ reason.

VERY competitive! As in the smartest kid I know (graduated with my son), didn't make the cut even though he receive a full scholarship + R&B to another university. Kid scored crazy high on the MCAT and ended up at a top 10 med school.

As the other pp mentioned, most kids change their minds when they have to take Organic Chemistry.

BS/MD programs can be an excellent option for certain kids who are absolutely certain they want medicine and are able to commit to the field at a young age. They are extremely competitive to get in but once in, many programs allow students to explore a wide range of interests without the extreme pressure that regular premed students feel. Minimum GPA requirements are often quite reasonable and there are often special research and mentoring opportunities for these students. The guarantee is priceless to some students. There are those who falsely assume that if you're good enough to get into a BS/MD program, you'll definitely get into a great medical school the regular route. That's really not necessarily the case! Medical school is getting incredibly hard to get into, and harder every year. Check out the BS/MD section of College Confidential for more info.
