| So a month ago I got a notice that i did not pay a toll. There was a picture of a car and licensee plate on the bill (which was for 1.50$.) We have never owned that type of car, nor have had that license plate. So I sent it back to EZPass with box 7 checked for "this is not my car" . Today, I receive a second and final notice that I need to pay this 1.50 plus 25$ fee now. If I don't pay in the next 3 weeks I will be sent to collections and have all these other fees. After 20 minutes on hold, the person on the phone informs me that I have to go to the DMV and get some proof that this is not my car. Apparently they will know what to give me. I said, how do I know if this will be acceptable documentation, since I was never notified that the last paper I sent in was not accepted?" She then informed me that my denial letter is soon to go out. Super. My question is, can i find this info on DMV online (I looked through about 15 pages of forms before I gave up, since I really don't know what I am looking for), or must my husband (whose name the EZPass is in) go in person to the DMV? |
| Which state? All DMVs have different procedures. |
| Virginia |
| Get your name as an additional name in the EZPass, or else they won’t deal with you. Some of the DMVs have a separate window for EZPass (different line). FYI, Tyson’s does NOT. |
| OP here, so it turns out the EZPass account is in my name but the fake car registration is in DH's name. The bill was sent to my DHs name, which is odd since it was from EZPass. He was going to call EZPass again and then call the central DMV number and see if he can get anywhere. The whole thing is pretty weird. |

Your EZPass has nothing to do with it, because the car that went through did not have a device in it (or it did but it didn't register), that's why it got a toll request ticket. So EZPass is sending the toll to the address associated with the license plate on the car.
Apparently, unknown to you, that car is registered to your DH. Two possibilities: 1. Someone stole your DH's identity to register the car; OR 2. You husband owns a car you don't know about for reasons you will have to discover. |
This. EZPass is sending the bill to the owner of the car bc it had no EZPass (or a non-working one). This issue is clearly related to car registration. |
| When you go to VA DMV on line, log in as your DH and see what vehicles are registered to him. |
| Plot thickens... |
|
or log into your county tax administration and see if what vehicles you are a paying property tax on...
but being the car isn't "yours" but DH's let DH take care of it.. |

I definitely wouldn’t be intimidated by the threat of collections. But I’m old and have no need for credit, ymmv.
You could have just paid the original $1.50 but what happens the next time and the time after that? Screw them, don’t pay. |
| You need to prove a negative? Clearly someone doesn't like logic. |
| OP here to solve the mystery. DH had a car from a dealer for one night when his regular car wasn't able to get fixed before they closed....he went on the toll road the next day, completely not thinking about the fact that his EZPass was in the other car. Since this was in march, we both completely forgot about it. He paid the 26.50 and we have moved on. Lesson learned. |
