DC SYEP

Anyone have a Dc that is participating/past participant in the DC Summer Youth Employment Program? Do you know how assignments to particular employers is made? I know the kids gave their preferences for certain types of work but wondering if the actual employers received information such as grades, extracurricular activities, etc. and made decisions based on this type of information. Or is it more likely DC just assigned the kids to employers without regard for these things.

Does it still have Marion Barry’s name?

I am an employer. We receive resumes but I don’t remember getting grades (or taking those into consideration).

I am an employer, too. We ask for kids with certain interests and they give us resumes to pick from. About 25 percent never show up. If your kid wants something in particular, ask for it. We would love to have a motivated kid who shows up on time and is willing to work.

Parent of past participant. I feel like more people should be aware that a significant portion of the SYEP participants are athletes who sign up to "work" at their school and spend much of the time training (in violation of DCIAA rules about coach-supervised off-season workouts). I think that athletics are great for kids -- particularly at risk kids, but the shady stuff that goes on with high school sports in DCPS is crazy.

My highschooler knew where they wanted to work (former Elementary school) and contacted them directly. Then they filled out the SYEP application and the school selected them from the candidates.

Yes I agree. Reach out to the employer directly- they can request specific kids.
