Car seat on a plane

Anonymous
I've never done this before but am about to travel on a plane with a carseat for my 1 year old - it's specifically designed for travel (the sit & stroll).

If any flight attendants give me a hard time, what do I need to do?

They shouldn't give you a hard time unless you haven't paid for a seat for the child.

I've flown on six different planes with my 1 YO in the last month and had no problems whatsoever. We had purchased a seat for her and brought our carseat on board with the gogo kidz wheels attached. It was honestly super easy and several flight attendants offered to help with the install. This was on Continental and Delta.

PP here: not sure about your stroller, but our seat+wheels will not fit through the x ray machine. We just tell TSA it needs to be hand wanded and they've been great about it. The logistics (security, installing seat on plane) esp if you are traveling alone) can be a bit challenging but just leave yourself lots of time and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it!

I have the sit-n-stroll. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! We fly frequently. Nevere had a problem. On 2 occassions, flight attendants ask to inspect it to make sure it was FAA-approved seat - and that designation is clearly printed on the seat. You just need to ask for a seat-belt extender so that you can buckle the seat in.

That piece of baby gear ranks as one of my all-time best baby purchases.

We are flying on TAP next week with a car seat. Can you please elaborate?

Just make sure you know where the FAA-approved sticker is on the car seat, should a flight attendant ask you. Otherwise you'll be fumbling around for it while a long line of passengers accumulates behind you. Also, we were told that the car seat has to go in the window seat.

That's great - very helpful. It was given to me by a friend.

Is it difficult to buckle it in?

No, it is not difficult to buckle in at all. The kid is strapped into the car seat like in your car. Then you "buckle" the entire chair to the airplane seat - as if it were a person. There are cut-outs for the seat belt to cross over.

If you don't purchase a seat how do you get the car seat/sit n stroll on the plane? We will be flying to Europe with our 16 months old and we chose dates when based on our experience the flights won't be full at all. I am hoping the flight attendants will let us take the sit n stroll without problems. But what do people usually do in these situations? Thanks!

When you check in, just ask if there is a seat free next to you or if you seats can be reassigned to an area where there is an extra seat. if there is, they almost always let you bring on the carseat.

Just in case you can't bring the carseat on, buy one of the $15 carseat check bags (they have them at Target and the baby stores). If you do gate check and it is raining out, you will get a wet car seat back at the end of the flight.

Thanks so much! Yes, I was thinking what to do in case I need to check it at the gate. Now I feel prepared. Thanks!
