Trump - “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

The President of the United States has no business calling any foreign nation a "shithole"!!! For God's sake, people, have you no sense of decency left? These are our allies, our trade partners and the homelands of millions of American citizens.

There is no discussion on this - trump was WRONG.

He was wrong, but that doesn't make it a racist statement. The people calling it a racist statement (cnn,MSNBC,etc.) wonder why people don't see them as being credible. They will literally spend hours obsessing over one comment.

Trump has a long and well-documented history of racist words and actions. But keep defending him.

Everyone knows the sentiment behind the words was racist, bigoted, uninformed, you name it: he not only denigrated two places whose citizens are dark-skinned, hd asked why we allow citizens from those countries to immigrate to the US. What is he saying to you about those citizens? I know what I hear.

So... you hold the leader of the free world to the same standards as anon trolls on the internet?

What is wrong with some of you?

GTFOH. Been to Haiti? I have. Shithole is too kind.

If you are gonna say the same stuff about your fellow Americans but bash Trump, just STFU. Hypocrite.

I have been to Haiti many, many times, PP. Stop embarrassing yourself. It is not a "shithole" - the people are amazing and kind and the geography is beautiful.

I am saddened that you think this is how the President of the United States should refer to any foreign nation - whether you agree with the under-educated statements or not.

I deployed to Haiti on a humanitarian mission after an earthquake.

Do you like feces, voodoo, and garbage? It’s quite lovely, then.

So you think we should keep those people out then?

Why don’t “those people” improve their Country? If it’s so geographically gorgeous and Haitians are so kind and fabulous? Improve Haiti, quit leaving.

DP... why didn't the poor Irish just stay in Ireland and improve it? Why didn't Trump's mother do the same for Scotland; Melania the same for Slovenia? Why didn't your ancestors just stay in their sh1thole and improve their lot instead of leaving? SMH.. you guys are dense.

For the Irish, the potato crop lead to an unsustainable population coupled with land issues.

Look how quickly their population grew:

Why weren't the Irish smart enough to figure out how to deal with land issues and the failure of the potato crop? Poor uneducated Haitians are expected to fix their country's problems today, but not the poor uneducated Irish of over 100 years ago?

Why don't the leaders and residents of the poor red states like MI and WV fix their sh1thole of a state instead of their young people leaving for other states for a better life?

You studied this in school right?

In 1845, for example, 24 percent of all Irish tenant farms were of one to five acres in size, while 40 percent were of five to fifteen acres. This included marshland and bogland that could not be used for food production. As a result, holdings were so small that the only crop that could be grown in sufficient quantities, and which provided sufficient nourishment to feed a family, was potatoes.

Crop failure caused mass emigration because there was no food to be had. The population was simply unsustainable and the country was overly dependent on the only crop that could (barely) feed a population that had doubled in less than 50 years.

You will notice that graph shows that Ireland, 150 years later, still has a smaller population than it did at 1848 despite modern agricultural science and practices!

http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Irish_Potato_Famine_(1845–1849)

They could have stayed there and figured it out, just like you expect Haitians to do.

Yes, I know exactly why the Irish came, just like the Polish, Germans, etc... but the comment about how poor uneducated Haitians should just fix their own country rather than coming here could be applied to every sh1thole country that these Europeans were escaping from.

Those people came decades ago. Ireland, Germany, and Poland are not 3rd world shitholes anymore.

But those places were sh1tholes back when hordes of them were immigrating to the US. That is the point. And Germans and Irish aren't trying to immigrate in droves to the US anymore because their countries aren't as bad as they used to be. However, poor Poles are immigrating to the UK in droves. My British inlaws make comments about the poor Polish immigrants all the time.

Back then you didn't have any Haitian immigrants to the US. You people really really are thickheaded. Poor people no matter when or from where want to leave their sh1tholes for a better life. It was true 200 years ago and true today. The US took in poor people from Europe who were escaping their sh1tholes for over 100 hundred years, and the British Americans living in the US didn't want them then. Now it's people from non European countries, and descendants of the poor Polish, Irish, Germans are saying the same thing about these other poor immigrants.

So who should we let in?

What should our immigration policy be?

What is a proper number of immigrants to admited?

Should we pick the best and brightest, or allow for family reunion?

Should we pick ones from more compatible cultures, or be blind as to origin?

Should we exploit immigrants for cheap labour, or be more protectionalist?

That is all part of a rational debate.

Great use of dogwhistle. BTW, we use “labor” he is the US. Go worry about your own nation’s issues.

Some cultures are more compatible with US values because of a shared heritage. Not every culture appreciates the "rights of Englishmen" and has different tolerances for corruption, the rights of women and homosexuals and sees a different role for religion in society, free speech, and economics than what we have here. Some cultures are more clannish and nepotistic, others are more open to strangers.

What values we want new immigrants to embrace, and what values we are willing to tolerate which may be in conflict with our own should be a matter for public commentary.

Pray tell, what are “US values”? The Trumps are the purest definition of clannish and nepotistic. As for “homosexual,” bye, Felicia.

US values? Those mentioned in the Bill of Rights and celebrated by all Americans:

Free speech, open elections, equal opportunity for women and all races (not only for one ethnic group or clan), equal protections for GLBT, merit for admission to government employment and admission to schools (rather than by clan or caste), freedom to practice religion of your choice, ability to own private property, low tolerance for corruption.

Many of those values are not prioritized in much of the world.

I wish he didn’t use those words to describe other countries. We have our own issues we need to work on and we have our share of toxic Superfund sites.

+1. Everyone who isn’t deaf blind or dumb can see Trump is a racist by now. Even a former RNC chief michael Steele says it’s obvious.

The president of the United States does not call a neighboring, allied neighbor country a shithole! End of discussion! Christ, what is wrong with you people defending such an undiplomatic, unstatesmanlike and untrue phrase?!! Have we really sunk so low as a once-great nation?

You are correct that his wording was very unstatesmanlike.

Nope, I have never heard of him and am sure he was never Presdent of the United States speaking about foreign countries we have diplomatic and economic relationships with.

Try again, Skippy. To defend trump just makes you as trashy as he is.

So why aren't people moving en masse to Haiti and Africa?

Surely in Haiti's case, with infant mortality rates 9x of the USA, a literacy rate of 48% and a life expectancy of 63 years, it would be a wonderful place to raise a family.

https://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/haiti_statistics.html

Agree, all the pearl clutching libs need to go live in Haiti and Africa - you know, since they are so gorgeous and full of beautiful, warm, and friendly people.

I work with Haitians and Africans every week. They are, no joke, the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. They work hard, most of them don’t have much, but they are so grateful for the opportunity and their lives here.

I completely agree re those two groups of people, and our church gives a lot of money to try to help.
