Why is MSI Classic so expensive?

MSI Rec is about $100 a season for rec. Our (parent) coach just told us that for U10 next year it will be $500-600 each season. Same number of games. Are the rec fields free and Classic teams have to play rental?

For U10-U12, it’s ranges from $1,700-$1,900 per team. Divide this by 10 players it’s about $170-$190 per player per season. The coach and/or team manager will also add in other miscellaneous costs for tournaments, etc. Rec teams uses cheap MCPS grass fields while Classic plays on turf fields (or good grass fields) at SoccerPlex for at least half of their games.

Thank you. So the league fee is $170-$190 and then maybe they add on the field rental fees for practices? No tournaments for this team.

Yes. Field rentals are pretty cheap. I can’t remember but it was a very minimal fee. Managers sometimes include the cost for a gift to the coach especially if it’s a volunteer parent coach. Remember, teams will charge a lot more if it’s a paid coach instead of a parent volunteer coach.

Most likely there is a paid coach for at least one practice. A lot of parent coaches for rec decide that either they've taught the kids what they can and/or 2 practices a week is a lot to manage.

From my experience, it varies by team ... and depends on several factors - supplementary external coaching being one of the major drivers, but also number of players on roster, equipment / jersey purchases, field rentals, etc.

Unless you are locked into this team (e.g., for continuity purposes), it is worth checking with other teams in the league as there are usually options at all price points.

I can only share our experience with Classic average years ago as my DD joined a travel team. My DD team along with several other teams were parent-coached. The parent coaches teams performed much better than the paid coached teams. Some of the paid coached teams charged over $1,000 per season. At this price point, your DC might as well join a lower level travel team.

Sorry. Typo. “Several years ago” not “average years ago”.
