Almost at the stopping point on the College process.
We have a rising senior. Good grades, GPA above 4.0 Has done AP & Dual Enrollment. If she stayed the course would make it into a good school with scholarships. However, child appears to be burnt out. Does not want to discuss road to college plan. Has done college tours. Has even said would opt out to avoid the work and possible debt. What do you do? At this point family is open to College alternatives. A gap year is also a thought. |
| Give it a rest for a few weeks. School is almost out. Kids are tired. |
| She can also apply, get accepted, choose a school and defer for a year. This method gives them a plan and a break. She needs to have an idea of what she wants to do in the year time frame. |
| Look at gap year ideas. |
This is what we are doing. Just got accepted with approval to defer for 1 year (sent acceptance deposit). DD is doing a Gap year, needs the break. She may decide to go to a different school who knows. But there is a great one waiting for her and she gets a much needed break. |
What will she be doing on her break? |
| She may not be ready to move away from home. |
| Let her rest over the summer. Don't discuss it. In September bring it up. Look at uncollege.org for ideas for alternatives. And so many things she could do in a gap year. She may catch the college fever from friends but sounds like she really needs a rest. Plan grounding summer activities like trips, outdoor stuff, creative stuff where she can get to know herself and not think about the future. |
| Community college? I would not allow a gap year. This sounds more about money than anything. |
|
You need to explain that high school, the way she did it, is way harder than college!
So do whatever you all need to do to meet deadlines, and don't worry. She'll recuperate. You could consider a gap year, but she might not even need that. |
| DH did an exchange in Norway the year after he graduated from HS. It was a game changer for him. |
| No worries. Mine was also into avoidance about this time. Kicked into gear start of senior year when everyone else was focused on it. Let the summer be one of non-pressure. |
|
Junior year is a grind and many kids are burned out this time of year. Give your DC some space and see how it goes during the summer. As DC's classmates start talking about colleges, DC might get into it again.
Maybe have her ease back on the senior year schedule a little too. A gap year is also something to consider. |
definitely! how many APs this fall? She doesn't need a full plate of them. |
|
My junior is definitely worn down to the nub. She goes to a private that limits APs which has been a really helpful, but she still has a lot of school work plus her sport and extra curriculars that she really enjoys. We dumped a few ECs that did not really ring her bell going into junior year. We also really prioritized sleep, exercise, nutrition, and overall wellness. She is still really tired and ready for summer.
Give it a rest. Honestly, there isn't much to do college-wise right now. We are going to graduations, parties, and then out of town for a couple of short trips before she goes to camp. College application prep is on hold until August 1st in our house. |
