| We grill a lot in the summer but I want to stay away from sugary BBQ sauce and teriyaki type marinades, especially for chicken. What can I marinate chicken in that makes it taste great (I hate the taste of plain chicken) but doesn’t add a ton of carbs/sugar? |
| less sugar maybe but no sugar free. don't you know how bbq sauce is made? |
| I think you have to go a totally different direction from barbecue sauce for that. Chicken is wonderful marinating in yogurt - plain or with any flavors you like such as garlic, herbs, lemon, ginger, curry blends, spices, etc. |
| Look up keto BBQ sauces. I don't do keto but I try to reduce sugar. I recently made pulled chicken in the instant pot with tomato paste, vinegar, liquid smoke, garlic, spices, and a little splenda. Found the recipe online by Googling keto recipes. I'll probably skip the Splenda and liquid smoke next time. |

The Whole30 book has a bbq sauce recipe that uses applesauce for a little sweetness instead of adding sugar. It’s been a while since I made it but DH likes it well enough.
You can do a sugar free dry rub and let it sit on the meat overnight. If doing pulled pork, make a Carolina style vinegar based sauce (mop) instead of a sugary bbq sauce. This makes great chicken—brine for two hours and the dipping sauce is good on veggies as well—my teenage son loved it: http://meljoulwan.com/2009/06/09/the-best-chicken-you-will-ever-eat-ever/ |

G Hughes BBQ sauces. I’ve found them at Giant grocery store. You can also order them online.
There are also several new brands of calorie free salad dressing and marinade. Check the salad dressing aisle. |
These are popular in our house! |

This recipe is soo good even without the green sauce and just a little sugar from lime juice.

I make a simple marinade at home:
1 lime (zest as much of the green as you can, then squeeze the juice onto the chicken) a little olive oil, salt, pepper, cilantro chopped up. That's it. It tastes really good, but light. I came up with this when I was doing low-FODMAP diet (for digestive troubles). I usually put it all in a zip lock bag and let it sit for at least 30 min, but even better if it is all day or overnight. Super easy. Light. No sugars. |

Another marinade that I learned when I was doing "Let's Dish" (a meal prep business that used to be in this area) was to use a mixture of salsa and soy sauce. I know -- I thought it was really weird, but it has a great flavor and can be used on pork or chicken, and probably beef too (but I haven't done that one yet).
Super easy. Serve your meat with a mixture of corn, diced red pepper, black beans, and a teaspoon of taco seasoning (and a squirt of olive oil). You can put all of this in a foil packet and heat it on the grill too. |
This is what I use, too. I've made my own before but G Hughes sauces are so easy and so good! |
| I love grilled chicken breasts marinated in lemon, olive oil and garlic. you can throw in some oregano too. |
