Before School Care in Lafayette?

Anonymous
We're moving soon, so one of my kids is going to be going to Lafayette. I'm not exactly comfortable with her walking to/from school on her own. [It's more than a mile. =/]

But I have to be at work by 8:30. The earliest Lafayette allows for children to arrive is supposedly 8:30.

My husband has to be at work before I do.

So I was wondering, does anyone know of any local before school care? Maybe a local church or something where you can drop off the kids early and then they can go over to school.

I've already checked around with our new neighbors [all very friendly], but none of them have elementary school kids. =/ Or else their children are in private schools nowhere near Lafayette.

Ah... I'm excited about the school, but I'm a little worried about this situation.

Lafayette has an afterschool program that also provides care before school starts, I think as early as 7:30. Call the school to get the contact information so you can sign up - slots have been going quicly lately

Definitely sign up with the afterschool program. You won't have to see your child for about 10 hours! It's a quick dinner, quicker bath, then off to bed until you wake him/her up in the morning at 6 a.m. to get them there in time!

WTF is wrong with you?

OP here...

I don't want to get rid of my children for 10 hours a day. =!

But thanks for that info. I'll look into it.

My only problem is... I don't want to have to pay $150 a month just to drop off my daughter at 8:15 instead of 8:30...

But I suppose that's what I'll have to do until I can find a better solution.

I read somewhere that there's a breakfast program, where kids can eat in the cafeteria as early as like 8:15? Does anyone know about that?

I don't need to get her there super early and I really don't want to drag her to school extremely early either.

Call the school and they can tell you about the breakfast program. Here is the link to LAP, the onsite before/afterschool care program. http://lapprogram.org/about/

I don't think there is any other program. and we couldn't get into LAP (so we did a babysitter). You can always advertise in the lafayette weekly and see if you can come up with another arrangement with another family. Contact the school to do that.

$150 a month is about $7.50 a day.

I am not sure how much you were expecting to pay to drop you kid off early somewhere - but this is a bargain.

Well, in all fairness to OP, she only needs 15 minutes each day. $7.50 for 15 minutes of childcare is $30.00/hour!

OP, a lot of moms and dads in our town in such a situation work out an arrangement with some parents of compatible children at the same school.

I should add, that what you are paying for when you pay for aftercare plus a little morning care, even though you relly just need the before care, is reliability. If you rely on some neighborhood parents, they might travel or be sick, have sick kids etc. If you pay for before and aftercare you will always have someone available -- that's really what you are paying for.

All DCPS have a free breakfast program. All children are allowed to come to school no earlier than 8:00 to receive breakfast (or they can bring breakfast) Anyway, they are allowed to come as early at 8am......Hopefully 8:00am give you enough time to get to work.

good luck!!

It's even cheaper than that for morning care - $115 per month

reality is that the OP needs more than 15 minutes each morning. She said that she needs to be in her office at 8:30 - so unless she works in Friendship Heights - there are few places where you can drop off a child at 8:15 at Lafayette and make it to your destination (park, get to your desk etc) in 15 minutes.

$115 is still a bargain for the comfort that everyday you have a plan.

All kids are entitled to breakfast and there are usually kids there eating - how old is your child? There are also lots of kids who hang out on the playground for a while before school starts (weather permitting). Again, if you have an older kid that wouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't leave a pre-k through 2nd grader alone there.
