I'm on the NE regional from NYC to DC right now. Guy next to me has a ticket for the NE regional, but not the one we're on now (it's one that runs only on the weekends). Conductor saw his ticket and said "you have to give up your seat because people with tickets for this train are looking for seats. this is a sold out train." Dude didn't get up, so conductor came back after a few minutes and told him to go sit in the cafe car. He grumbled and got up.
Just amazing how brazen people can be ... |

Seating issues are part of the reason I don’t take Amtrak so often.
If they let him on the train with that ticket I think he should have been able to sit anywhere. |
The problem is they didn't check tickets until we had already left Penn Station. They used to check them before people went down to the platform, but they didn't do that this time. |
Maybe if you took Amtrak more often (ever?) you'd know that they don't check your tickets when you get on. I often get on New Carrollton and no one asks for my ticket until the BWI stop. |
I have to show it when I get on in Union Station. |

I do this commute often and have for the past two years and not once have they checked tickets prior to boarding in either DC or NYC.
It is a bit baffling but I also understand that it's to keep things moving and keep them on schedule. This happened when I was on the train from DC to NYC and I was surprised they did not make the person with the incorrect ticket get off at the stop in Baltimore. I've been to other places where travel by train is more prevalent and that is always the common practice in those places. I always feel sorry for the people boarding along the way as the seats become nonexistent pretty quickly. Do they sell more tickets than they have seats for? |
| The regionals sell at 110% of capacity. Usually you can just change via the app while on the train... Even if it's sold out they won kick you off |
Change what via the app while on the train? If it's sold out, the app won't let you purchase the ticket. |
| Ugh. In other places (countries) they check your ticket right away(scanner) at at least throughout the journey and then take you off the train at the next stop if you don’t have the right one. It’s a risk you take. |
Yeah, let him stay, he gets to sit anywhere Otherwise kick him off. They weren't kicking him off so he gets to stay. |
