semen sample for IUI at SG

Anonymous
Ok, I just read on another board (fertility friend) that a woman had her IUI this morning and afterwards the RE's office realized they used the wrong sample!! She's in California so it's not a local clinic, but it's a horrible story - things looked perfect for the IUI, procedure was a breeze, and then they realized the mistake, had to tell her about it and give her the Plan B pill. I can't imagine the emotional issues that accompany something like this.

I am *trying* to do IUI at SG (first cycle cancelled after I over-stimmed and produced too many follicles; 2nd cycle cancelled because I got swine flu; but eventually I will make it through a complete IUI cycle, dammit!)

This story has me thinking about what the procedure is at SG for IUI, specifically "chain of custody" and labeling of the sample. Is there any possibility at all that it could get mixed up with someone else's? (In the case I read about today, it was clearly someone else's sample and labeled as such, but the dr. didn't read the name on the vial and did not show it to the patient.) Does your DH "accompany" the sample while they wash it, etc.? Do they show you the vial and ask you to confirm that it has your husband's name on it before they do the insemination? After hearing this story I will definitely be asking to see it. Just wondering for now . . . .

Don't worry -- the tech confirms names of the woman and the man, and checks IDs, to make sure everything matches up before the insemination.

At SG, as you are sitting on the table waiting for the IUI they will first show you the name on the label and tell that the color matches your color prior to loading the catheter and doing the IUI.

Of course, I never figured out how the color matching assured chain of custody, as I never was told what color had been assigned to us until I was about to undergo the IUI, so I just had to trust them that that was our color. I also assumed that they label that they showed me was the label that my DH saw, but I never confirmed that with him either.

You sound like a lawyer ("chain of custody") I have only done IVF at Shady Grove, but they were obsessive about checking my and my husband's names, DOBs, and SS#s when he provided his sample on the day of the egg retrieval. At the embryo transfer, they must have checked my name and SS# five times. I had no concerns.
