| DS wants to visit, I was curious to see if anyone has visited or has a child attending, and how the transition was from DC area to the South. It seems to check off every box on our list - near a big city, great academics, mid-sized, East Coast, and the liberal arts and pre-professional mix. Everything seems to match up to what we are looking for. Let me know if I am wrong, but this sounds like the ideal school for DS personally, but would love to know what is not to love about it. Thanks! |

My junior was interested, in part because we have family in Georgia. And in the last week has been watching the Georgia abortion mess and crossed it off her list. I had tried to explain why living in the South was so different, but current events made it click for her.
I grew up in NC and DH grew up near Emory. We moved to the DMV when our kids were preschool age. So this is all they really know. We both attended a different “Southern Ivy” that is a peer school to Emory. And because of that, we were concerned about sending a kid back to the South for college. But, near grandparents, etc. If your are from an affluent white conservative family and have the type of kid who would love to pledge a sorority, it might be a great fit. But the South is very race and class conscious and very conservative, and very religious. My kids who got to Diwali celebrations and know kids from all over the world and are liberal would not fit in. And it just isn’t an area that tolerates outsiders. I would be particularly concerned about a girl, because there is a much more narrow view about the appropriate view of women in society. A lot of smart girls from “good” Southern families there to get their Mrs. |
| The majority of students at Emory are not white, the majority of students are NOT from the South, and the vast, vast majority of students at Emory are vote Democrat. PP is ignorant. |
+1 Not only is PP ignorant, what’s a “southern Ivy?” |
Duke? Vanderbilt? Davidson? |
well 60% of Emory students are minorities, 75% are from outside the South, 85% voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and 75% don't join sororities, so... |
| My niece just graduated this week. It’s got a lot of people that are from out of state. It doesn’t give off some “southern belle” vibe and has rigorous academics. Maybe years ago it was an MRS degree school but it certainly isn’t now (check out the rankings). Anyway she seemed very happy there. The only thing I heard her complain about was the weather and ATL traffic. |

But the abortion concerns are real. I have a friend whose DD is at Indiana and even there the girls have to be savvy due to strange conservative reproductive health laws (maybe to do with access to birth control).

All I can say is OMG! I am from Asia, studied in the south decades ago, and even then I never felt the scene to be this brutal as the PP describes. Now Atlanta is a growing and thriving metropolis with people all over the world either working or going to college. Its a wonderful city. Emory is a great place to study, especially Pre-med and Business. |
Yes, I agree that that is very much worthy of consideration. But the rest of PP's post was just so far off the mark I don't even know where to begin. |
| Southern Ivy is a thing: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Southern%20Ivy |
+1 the description was not even remotely accurate re Emory |

My DS is at Emory now. It is a very international student body. That said, I was surprised at how much of The social life revolves around fraternities and sororities. My kid did not pledge but most of his friends did. The school is VERY supportive of its fraternities. I don’t think you need to be involved in them to have a great time at the school but Emory does do a lot to promote them. My sons roommate is in a frat founded by Robert E Lee but almost all the members are of Southeast Asian or Hispanic descent.
Academically it is a great school. My only gripe is it can be hard to get into the more popular classes as a freshman and sophomore. The dorms are great! They are opening a sparkling new student center this summer. If I had a daughter I would definitely be concerned about Georgia’s new abortion law and would probably discourage her from going to school there. |
PP really knows nothing about Emory. This is total misinformation. |

I went to Emory. There is NOTHING conservative about Emory. It's a liberal haven in a conservative state.
I grew up in Alabama. I know conservative. Emory is a progressive, diverse school and your kid would love it. |
