Experience in U9 with Arlington Travel Soccer?

Anonymous
Anyone has experience with U9 Travel Soccer Girls with Arlington? Specifically, do all girls get to play about the same? Do coaches like them playing Rec Soccer or any other Sports? Just trying to figure this out if it's the right move. DD wants to give it a try and since she made the team, I just want to make sure she wouldn't miss out on other thing if she chooses to do so.

Thanks!

At U9, most kids still play other sports. Many still play rec soccer. We chose to give up rec soccer because at that age we felt 3 90 min travel practices per week and a game were already on the high end for an 8-year old and we didn't want burn out down the road. We also didn't think it was fair to rec kids for my kid to just show up for games and not rec practices. Further, our rec team pretty much dissolved because almost every kid made travel and you could only have 2 travel players.

The higher the team, the less tolerance for absences from practices and games. Lower teams generally have much more leeway.

Our daughter still did Rec soccer while on a high ASA team until 4th grade. But it is Rec, and it became her show - if she was there, they would win, if she missed the game, they would lose. The pressure got to her, and nobody could complete or make a pass.

If your daughter is good, try to get her onto a Rec boys team - a lot more competitive, and can learn to be a lot more aggressive.

hmm.. the two most popular rec leagues (MSI/Sam) in Montgomery County does not allow travel players to play. It is interesting that not all rec league do the same.

13:38 raises the issue. Travel soccer is incredibly demanding on a child's time. One of DD's friends is a high caliber player and made travel. She wants to stay with the rec team, but makes no practices, and only about half the games since they often compete with travel games on the weekends. They would hate to lose her because she dominates the field when she's there, but it would almost be nice to have another girl there consistently. Her parents said they have also had to cut back on other extracurriculars because there isn't enough time in the week.

Arlington changed the rules travel players are no longer allowed to play rec. this was changed for soccer and basketball.

NP. As of a couple of years ago in Arlington, Yes. But get on it early. My daughter was unable to transfer to a boys team since they were already maxed with travel players on the team.

Actually this is not true. They do allow 2 travel players up until 4th grade. 5th grade and up aren’t allow to have travel players anymore. It was confirmed by the Rec Director
