Stoddert Elementary

I am looking for some information on Stoddert Elementary. My husband and I are considering a move to Glover Park and have don't know anything about this school. While our daughter won't be ready for Kindergarten for another 3 years, any insights would be very helpful. Thanks,

You'll have a brand-spanking-new facility attached to an arts and sports complex. Which will probably also mean a resurgence of neighborhood interest in the school. (which, in turn, may mean less diversity). Historically, it's been a small school with some intensely involved parents who are savvy and effective advocates.

Three years down the road is hard to predict -- especially as Rhee and Fenty come under increasing fire. But facilities (and neighborhood response to new facilities) are relatively predictable at this point.

In theory, there should be universal PreK which means it might be only 2 years of waiting.

What is the current leadership like? The quality of the teachers?

Are there plans for this in the DCPS budget which support it financially? I'm not aware of that but would be interested to see it. Otherwise I think it's wishful thinking.

I thought the Council approved $20 million for 1,000 new PreK slots this year. That said, Rhee does whatever she wants with the DCPS budget, so who knows where that $20 million will go. Then again, since gentrification seems to be the easiest way for her to raise test scores, it wouldn't surprise me if Ward 3 schools got PreK fairly quickly.

The ed specs for Stoddert's modernization include 2 PreK classrooms (for 4 y.o.) and also mention that 3 y.o. will be covered by daycare programs run through DPR at the new community center adjacent to the school. Meanwhile, DPR is out of the daycare business, but their programs have been handed over to the local Headstart grantee agency. So you'll probably see a more educationally oriented program at the same site.
