I'm moving from a condo with a "landline" through verizon fios. Where I am moving there is no fios, only comcast (near Frederick)
I do NOT want to pay for phone service through comcast. Its not worth the $ for me. I do not like using a cell phone for daily calls, but I also dont place a lot of calls anyway. I just need to be able to place calls to schedule doctors appointments, follow up calls for occasional business, etc. So now Im trying to figure out what my voip options might be. It appears vonage now gets terrible reviews. I had a friend who used Magic Jack but if I called him from my cell it was always impossible to talk to him. A physical old fashioned hardwired landline would be great, but again the cost is too much, even more than comcasts $30 a month for phone service. Any feedback from happy voip users appreciated! |
I use https://voip.ms/ - a line is 85 cents per month, plus under a penny a minute for calls. They also have a flat rate plan for residential customers that is unlimited for under $5/mo.
I picked up a cheap refurbished cisco speakerphone and configured it according to their instructions, it was easy and gives great call quality. Refurbished Phones (get one configured for SIP): https://www.metrolinedirect.com/cisco.html Instructions: https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Devices#IP_Phones If you were to pick this phone ( https://www.metrolinedirect.com/cisco-spa525g2-ip-phone.html ) you'd just need to follow these instructions ( https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Cisco_SPA525G ). |
OP here, forgot to thank you for all this!! |
I just use Skype with a "Skype In" phone number. Works fine. I have phone numbers in a couple of different locations around the world actually so easier for people to call me on a 'local' number in London eventhough it's a Skype call to the USA. |
We've had https://www.ooma.com/ in my family for over a decade. When we bought it was buy once and pay nothing later but it's now like $6/month in taxes if we bought today. Still works great. Very reliable and for us just the cost of electricity. We've had the same box and phone number in DC, MD, and VA. Definiitely recommended! |
