Does PGD "guarantee" a healthy non-disabled child?

Anonymous
I am just starting to research IVF and came across this treatment. Does anyone know anything about it and if it is a helpful screening tool to ensure a healthy child?

I believe they screen the embryos for obvious genetic mutations but they cannot possibly screen them for every problem. Also if you have a specific problem that runs in your family, they can look for that (like cystic fibrosis). Hope that helps.

I'll just add to my post above that it is more for people who have recurrent miscarriages, have a genetic issue in their family, or are older and are very worried about Downs, etc.

Also, if you don't have a lot of embryos (ie if you are a poor responder) it may be difficult to do PGD. But I agree with the PP who said this can be a huge help to people with a specific genetic disease in their family (such as Huntington's Disease).

It can help those with single gene mutations but it does not help improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy, I had IVF with PGD at Shady grove and it cost us a lot of money but we didn't get us a healthy pregnancy, m/c at 11 wks with a chromosoamlly abnormal fetus.

No. A full chromosome PGD (not what PP did with SG) will screen for chromosome abnormalities. However, that just ensures that the baby will not have disabilities associated with chromosome abnormalities. Nothing can control for the uncertainties of pregnancy and child birth that can cause disabilities - for example, a cord injury.

It won't catch disabilities and it doesn't screen for every chromosome abnormality. Some are deletions so minute that even procedures like CVS, Amino, etc won't pick them. You have to specifically test for them. Ex. Prader Willi, etc
