What is the right age to start camp? Not that we need an activity, but just because it would be fun.

DC was 5 still a bit of an adjustment for him. I attribute this to the new environment.

We were going to start this summer. DC will be 2.5. It never occurred to me that it might be too early.

I think it totally depends on the child and his/her routine normally. Is your child at daycare or preschool now? If so, camp might not be such a big change for him/her. But, if your child is staying home with you and you bring him/her to various activities and stay there (e.g. isn't left somewhere for 3-4 hrs at a time), camp may be harder.

My daughter was in daycare from 3 months of age and she went to camp the first time when she was 3 (just about to turn 4). It was a 1/2 day camp for one week when she was visiting her grandparents and she LOVED it.

And... in terms of sleep away camp, I started it when I was about to turn 7 (for 2 weeks), my mom started it at 6 (for 2 months!). I think we will start our daughter at 6 or 7 for 1-2 weeks.
