Youth Hostel in NYC - in Harlem?

Hi DCUMs,

My 19 year old au pair told me last night that she and a friend are planning to travel to NYC over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and stay at a youth hostel in Harlem. It has been a long, long time since I have actually been in Harlem, but my recollection is that the neighborhood wasn't all that nice and perhaps not the best place for two 19-year-old girls to be staying.

Does anyone have any experience with this place and/or can anyone recommend a very inexpensive yet safe place to stay in NYC? Many thanks in advance!

I would try to stay in manhattan . I used to be an au pair .MONYE was an issue so I stay at the hostel a looong time a go and I don't remember wich one... tell her to stay next to the train station.

I've stayed at that one before. Not bad. It's actually right by Columbia University, which is also next to Harlem.
