Letting nanny go

Anonymous
We have had a great nanny for the past 2 years - she’s been there for us and we have been there for her over the past 2 years. We need to move out of state unfortunately and will be giving her 2.5mo notice. What else would you do for her?

Provide her with an awesome letter of reference.

We gave 1 week severance for each week our nanny had been with us.

That's... a lot of severance.

Great reference and at least one month severance. Also let your kids talk and FaceTime her to get over the initial loss.

Good luck with your move!

She's been with us 7 years. I think that's fair.

There's no way we could afford to give our nanny tens of thousands of dollars. Did you mean one week for each year?

Yes, sorry! 1 week for each year!

If she wants your help, offer to post on local listservs etc. to be sure she is set up with a good family. And be generous with leave while she is hunting for a new job.

When i had a family move away, they gave me a month of severance, a $100 visa gift card which i used to buy a sleeping bag and think of them every time I use it. They also gave me a calendar and the thing I loved most was a nice card with a personal note. That meant a lot and even more so when I reread it recently after being treated really poorly by a different family. I found a stash of nice cards I had received over the years and it really lifted my spirits after being treated so poorly. Those little notes can really mean a lot.

We did severance (don’t remember exactly how much) and I helped her find her next job with another family in our neighborhood.
