| Last evening, 7th grade students and parents in the Northeast Consortium were invited to a meeting to hear about all of the signature programs offered at the three choice high schools in the program: Blake, Paint Branch, and Springbrook. Would students or parents involved in any of these programs be willing to share positive and/or negative experiences? It sounds like the programs offered or more extensive than the buzz terms we've heard: arts/humanities, science/medical, and IB. Any information or experiences about the programs or the schools in general would be helpful as we begin looking at each. Thank you. |
| No direct experience yet but my dd went through this decision process for the coming school year. She knows kids at all 3 schools who all love the school they chose. I spoke to many parents at all 3 schools who all said you can’t make a bad decision because all 3 schools are strong. Great school spirit at all 3. My dd ended up choosing Blake because of her interest in the arts but it was not an easy decision. I strongly suggest going to all 3 open houses with your child. |
Do not attend Springbrook. |
| Could the person who said not to attend Springbrook be more specific about why this might not be the best option? Is it programming, or environment? |
Why not? Care to expand on your experience with the school? My son currently attends and loves it. He has a lot of friends, he has taken some IB classes and has really liked the teachers as well. He has also been on several sports teams, including the wrestling team which won the state championship this year and that experience was one of his favorite memories of high school so far. Compared to Paint Branch and Blake, Springbrook's building doesn't compare, it is small and needs repairs and the campus is small. But as far as high school experience, he is enjoying his time there very much. He has several friends who attend the other two consortium schools and they enjoy their experience as well. None of the schools are perfect, each of them has fights on occasion, but overall they are all good schools to attend depending on which signature program you are interested in. |

Each of the schools will put on a program that you should attend if you want to go out of your home school. I went to all of them a few years back and they were very informative. My kids went to/go to Blake. The art, music, theater and dance programs are amazing. The current principal is really good, but he's only been there for two years. I was not a fan of the former principal.
Depending on your kids' interests, you might also want to look at Thomas Edison because starting in 10th or 11th, kids can take programs there as well. |
