Botox hard sell over the phone???

Anonymous
I was a little taken aback at this when I called to schedule the advertised "free consultation" for facial treatments at a well-known area medspa. The woman was really trying hard to sell me packages over the phone, just by hearing about my concerns and proposing certain treatments for them (fractional laser at $5K, botox packages for $1K, etc.) I can't imagine my doctor's office doing this for some ailment I called in about, and although I realize this is more cosmetic I'd still like to think it's treated in a professional way. Pushiness in sales is a real turnoff for me, especially for this type of thing, so I politely declined. However, it got me wondering if this is the norm in the cosmetic procedures industry, and if not, where I can go in the Rockville/Bethesda area for a more professional approach. Any good experiences or recommendations would be appreciated!

Over the phone is kind of aggressive but maybe not so much in person. People are cutting down on spending on luxuries but I've heard the cosmetic industry is fairing quite well. I think the very rich who normally buy this kind of stuff can still afford to do so and it doesn't hurt that there are discounts to be had at some places. I also heard that older folks are getting procedures done to look younger so they can compete with younger job seekers.

I also got the treatment from a well-known medspa when I had called to inquire about laser treatment. Before they would even give me the info, they wanted my name and phone number. Called me several times after that to get me to sign up.

It's obvious that their phone people are on commission for how much they sell. Their prices were 4 times higher than a small, non-chain medspa I finally found that allowed me to purchase by appointment instead of having to buy a package.

Botox is a big money maker for everyone EXCEPT plastic surgeons. Dermatologists and those that usual procedures are covered by insurances began using botox to get cash. Because insurance payments are so low, botox cash is great. For plastic surgeons, who get cash for surgeries, botox is "just for the patients". That's why they usually have a much lower rate, and are better at it. They are the only specialty that are trained to do it during their residency. All others just need to take a ONE day course! Usually, the doctors affiliated with the medspas only get a slight cut, the medspa can get upto 80%. The doctors get a chance to meet those possible interested in surgcal procedures.

Did not mean this as a hijack of the thread, just thought the insight would answer the question of why the "hard sell"

Do either of the previous two posters want to recommend their provider? I am the OP and am still looking for a reputable, professional place to go for my first botox/etc. treatments, but am nervous about these places obviously just trying to make a sale. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences!

Dr. Melda Issac in DC. A true professional; nice office and staff. No hard sell at all.

BTW, I did the CO2 fractional laser and the results are amazing. I no longer wear foundation and my skin looks fresh and 15 years younger.
