Someone linked this on my social media - this is a crazy, crazy story. And very sad. Many lives and families destroyed. While I definitely get why the parents couldn't intervene later, and perhaps I'm a helicopter parent, but if my 19 year old daughter came home and told me her roommate's dad was spending nights/living in the dorm/house, I would not have left it at the school shrugging their shoulders at me. |
| I read this as well. INSANE. I have a hard time believing it, though the reporting didn't seem flimsy at first glance. |
| I agree, this is one of the most INSANE things I have ever read. Thank you for this link, it's way more in depth than the other news articles I've read. I'm just completely and utterly flabbergasted. |

As a parent about to send my HS senior to college--the college's response as reported here is frightening. It's telling that apparently NO students who weren't in this group bothered to tell the administration that a non-student was living full-time in campus housing. Or maybe students did try to alert the college and the response was what SLC reportedly said in the article--a parent can visit his kid on campus. Maybe I missed it but--was no one else living in that dorm except the students who are in the article and who were under his influence?
This has me planning to warn my kid about speaking up to the college, not just to the students involved, if something is this kind of off-kilter, even if other students say it's fine. |

The one chick, Claudia, has a pretty nutso website - looks like it is still active:

| Actually --this could be more useful posted in the college forum here instead of the off-topic forum. |
| Is there TLDR cliffnotes version of that article? |
| This is wild. There should be a movie about this. Crazy how persuasive this man was. |
College student's con man father moves into dorm with his daughter and her roommates. He proceeds to brainwash the lot of them into living with him, submitting to his control, etc. - one male roommate appears to have left and successfully put it behind him. Two of them women are still with him. One has left but seems to still be brainwashed. One brother and sister are still unaccounted for (not presumed deceased). It's way more involved than that - story is worth a read when you have time. |
Listen to her recording with her mom. OMG. https://claudiadrury.com/talking-with-my-mom |
| How on earth did the school allow this man to live there? When you rent a house, there’s usually a clause limiting the number of times someone not in the lease can stay over. How does a college allow an adult to basically move in to a dorm? |
Seriously. A grown man (a parent no less) MOVES IN to a dorm -- nobody says anything? There are not security guards, RAs, resident deans or anything? Or other students did not complain? |
|
Badly written, but yes, incredibly disturbing story. Lesson is that you build trust while your kids are still at home and teach them to watch out for red flags such as this man's many behaviors. |

Sarah Lawrence used to be a women's college and trust that this sordid tale would not have happened if it still had been.
Cannot believe this even happened -> So in late September 2010, at the beginning of sophomore year, when Talia told her housemates that her father was getting out of prison and needed to crash with them for a while, they were mostly unfazed. |
It wasn't a dorm. It was off campus housing. The landlord went to court to get this guy evicted eventually. |
