We're thinking of moving to Silver Spring, and I did some preliminary research and concluded that I liked Takoma PMS and Blair, based mainly on test scores. Now, of course I realize that comparing TPMS test scores, which include the magnet kids, with the test scores from other schools is pointless.
Given that, what school would you choose in that cluster, and why? |
If you move to Takoma Park, your kid has a slightly better chance of getting into the math magnet. I'm not exactly sure how it works, whether 10 or so kids from TP get in, or you get something like 10 pts added to your application, but anyway there's some advantage to living in the town itself. Of course, your kid had better really like math, science, and computer science, because it's pretty intense (my DC is there)! |
I don't think the magnet is a fit for him. He loves writing, drama, social studies etc . . . much more than math/science. It's a non-issue since we probably wouldn't move in time to apply, but I'm fine with that.

OP here,
So, looking at the websites, the scores from the Middle School Magnet Consortium are all pretty impressive, especially for kids with my son's demographic (African American), they rival Westland, which was also on my list of schools to explore. Does anyone have any thoughts on those 3 schools -- Parkland, Argyle, and Loiederman? Loiederman sounds like the best fit for him, but my understanding is that we've already missed the application deadline so he wouldn't get to choose. |
