Universities in vibrant communities

I’m inspired by the thread going on right now. I’m going to grad school for statistics/biostatistics in the fall of 2020 and want to live in an area with lots of cultural amenities, grad students or young professionals, and some green space. I went to a rural SLAC and want a different sort of experience. What are schools you would suggest? Also, I’m not a fan on the DC area and hope to move.

Hopkins, Harvard, and University of Washington all have top programs and are in fun places to live as a grad student.

What are you planning to study? That will help to direct you to a good place. If you’re studying something standard then I would say look at the schools in Boston. Tons of schools and tons to do, plus close to the coast and mountains for out of the city trips.

Just identify large, mid-size, and small cities where you think it would be cool to live (include cities in other countries as well--UBC I believe is good for bioinformatics) and look for universities there that have programs in your interest area. Even college towns like Ann Arbor, Madison, research triangle will be more vibrant than your rural undergrad college and would be fun for grad school. You might also look for schools that have higher ratios of grad students to undergrads (The U of Chicago is an example).
