We have 3 cars, 2 small SUVs and one large. We do not drive that much (about 5k miles a year per car). One car is for our nanny.
We have 2 children who are in ES and sports/car pooling has become important - only the large SUV can seat more than 3 kids (youngest still needs a booster for another 2 years). Our nanny will not drive any carpools, just local stuff with our 2. DH and I agreed to replace on of the small suv's with a 7-8 seater "normal" (40k range) car a few months ago. Now, DH's large SUV (which is really old and the home depot/utility vehicle of the family) needs repairs that are more than the car's value. He wanted a 4 door pick up but that is not practical with the needs for the car pooling/etc. I convinced him to replace it with another 3 row vehicle. The cars he is considering is a Lexus LX, which is a nice car but not what he really wants (damn truck!) and way expensive. If that is what he wants I am fine with it - but since he has a truck in his heart would you consider a lease for 3 years on car in this case? We will not need three cars when our nanny days are over, but that will be another 3-4 years. Typically we drive until the wheels fall off - or in our current car's case the struts are compromised so this is a new twist for us. Thanks! |

| If you can afford it buy the truck. In less you are carpooling now, don't worry about the 3 rows till you need to. |
| Does he actually use the truck as a truck more than three times a year? Does he drive his car to work and park in a parking lot? If he uses the truck as a truck and not as a commuter, get a used truck. If he doesn’t, another used SUV. |
Do not buy a VW!!! The thing will be falling apart in 5 years. Get the pilot. |
