Questions about Nanny/Help

Anonymous
Hi all - My spouse and I have two children - our eldest is in before/after care at their ES and our 1-year old is in daycare. I am fortunate enough to be considering a job that will pay more than enough so that we could afford hiring some help. I'm still trying to decide but one of the factors I am considering is the ability to hire some sort of help for my partner, especially when I travel (the partner would still work).

I think we would still keep our younger child in daycare but would drop aftercare for my older child (but keep the after school enrichment activities) and then hire someone to help with pickup after school, cook dinner, help keep the house clean, etc. My questions (that I can think of right now) are (1) how much would it cost for someone to just come in the afternoons? I've seen other posts saying between $15-30/hr. (2) do some nannies cook, clean, etc or is that asking too much? (3) maybe we should just hire a FT nanny and drop all child care, but we really like our current care provider situations (we pay $>1700/mo for daycare and >$500/mo for before/aftercare)? Thanks in advance, I just started researching all of this today.

You will not get an adult career nanny for part time work. You may find someone who is willing to come in early, without children present, to clean and meal prep, but I honestly think that will be a hard position to fill. You can start at $18 for just childcare and go up from there based on what she is willing to do. Remember that the nanny can find a position without cooking and cleaning for a fair wage, so you’ll need to add more $ as you add responsibilities. Also know that a college student will not likely be able/willing to help out on her off hours if you are wanting more help when you travel and that her class schedule may not continue to accommodate your needs.

These boards are full of people who want part time childcare help and rarely does it ever work out. The candidates you get are not going to be the best--they are going to be a bunch of flakes (what kind of person wants to just work a couple hours a day plus commuting and being away from their own family during a busy time?). And no way will someone good with kids want to do cleaning and meal prep.

Keep your kid in aftercare and hire a cleaning service separately, and sign up for meal delivery services.

I’ve been through four after school nannies for just one child in less than two years - and we pay $25 an hour. They just don’t stay.

Keep daycare and get a cleaning company.

This is correct. If you can’t go the au pair route it’s tough for people who need part time. College kids rarely take these jobs anymore.

A live-in nanny is a more competent alternative, if you have the space. Most live-in nannies with only part-time childcare fill in the other hours with housework.

That is a housekeeper who babysits - not a nanny.

This is exactly correct. But a nanny can keep the children’s rooms organized. Cleaners do the cleaning. You can however expect that a decent nanny will usually leave your space as clean and tidy as she found it.
