My friend puts her baby rear facing in the front seat

Anonymous
We are new friends, getting closer as days go by. She is not American but has lived here for over 10 years.

I’ve never seen her car, but today I did and watched her buckle her baby into the front seat, rear facing.

I’m shocked! MYOB, right? She’s very sensitive about culture/her accent, she always feels like she stands out (she doesn’t). She is so sweet and smart. I was so surprised.

Assuming she has a backseat, you have to tell her it’s against the law.

Something like omg my coworker got a ticket for having her baby forward facing too soon! She’s so upset! I know Larla is rear facing but did you know that’s not legal when you have a backseat available?

Ugh why the song and dance? If you're going to tell her, just tell her. What you posted is obnoxious. Either just say "hey Sarah, just an FYI that it's illegal to have Larla in the front seat. I wouldn't want you to get a ticket or for something to happen if you were in a car accident and you didn't know".

You can also tell her that it used to not be illegal but now it is. My sil put my niece (who is now 30) in the front seat rear facing. She is sad they changed the law.

It's no MYOB. She's your friend and you have to tell her it's illegal and dangerous for the baby.

This is safety issue so yes I say you tell her. If she gets in an accident tomorrow how will you feel if the child is dead or seriously injured? Do the right thing. If she keeps doing it anyway I personally would not be friends with her. Parenting style is to different.

OP here.

Surprised at this, as DCUM is almost always in the MYOB camp.

I didn’t know it was illegal.

She’s very sweet, and I suspect she doesn’t know it’s dangerous/against the law. She is such a sweet, kind wonderful mother and I am enjoying our budding friendship. I am cautious to upset her or embarrass her. I wish I could just do an anonymous call to the police.

Your friend is ignorant. Tell her it’s unsafe.

Getting the police to give her a ticket is more friendly then a heads up? Come on OP. Just say, "hey just in case you didn't know VA/MD/ whatever law says carseats have to be in the backseat. I wouldn't want you to get a ticket! Did you see game of thrones this weekend?"

Easy breezy and quickly change the topic.

Oh yeah because that's the way to nurture a budding friendship- by calling the police anonnymously on her instead of just being like "oh FYI that's illegal- I know it's none of my business but wanted to tell you in case you weren't aware. In the US it has to be in the back seat because of the air bags". Don't mention the fact that if the airbags deploy her child will legit be killed, but it's true.

“Hey Suzy, there’s something I wanted to share with you. I noticed that you put Larlo in the front seat. You might not be aware, but that is illegal. I’d hate for you to find out with the police, because the penalty is harsh. If it were me, I’d want you to tell me.”

You'd rather your friend get arrested than be offended by you telling her that what she is doing isn't allowed?
