Looking for a second opinion RE

Anonymous
I am the OP from the "I think my cycle might get cancelled" thread. I've decided to go get a second opinion at SG in DC. I've heard that Widra has a good reputation. Is there anyone else you would recommend at SG DC?

I cycled with Widra and while I think he is a solid RE I don't think he is good at thinking outside the box.

I primarily see Dr. Widra but I've met all of the REs in the DC office. I have a lot of confidence in him and I have been very happy with him overall. He really knows what he is doing and has been as accessible as I need him to be. He always responds to calls very quickly and he let me know when he was going to be out of town during my cycle, and assured me that he would be keeping a close eye on everything while he was away. I sought recommendations from a number of people and he was the RE who was recommended most often. My issues were pretty straightforward so I can't speak to the PP's comment about thinking outside of the box. I also have a friend who switched to Dr. Sacks after a couple of failed IVFs at SGF and she really loved him.

I've been a patient of Dr Widra's through 3 IVF cycles and I think he's a nice guy and a straight shooter. He adjusted quickly during my cycles when things didn't go according to plan and he was always willing to talk by phone (even encouraging me to call him b/c he could tell that I was reluctant to bug him). He explained his thinking about how he was choosing our protocols and was happy to talk through the pros/cons of other drug regimes. He called after the embryo transfers just to check in and see how I was feeling about the cycle.

That said, now that I've turned out to be a very poor responder there is not much more he can do for me. So I'm off to Cornell or CCRM in Colorado. But I would still recommend him - just know that if you turn out to be a super hard case there may not be that much that he (or anyone in DC) can do for you. Hope that helps!

With the caveat that I haven't started IVF, I recently sought a second opinion at Cornell. The Cornell physician recommended some additional testing and referred me to Dr. Eric Widra to do that testing and IVF, if I decide to go through with it.

If you search for his name on this board, you'll come up with a fair amount of posts on him.
