I took DD to the doctor's office because she had an infection on her ear caused probably by the earring metal. It formed a small swollen area bubble behind her ear hole which became hot to touch. She wouldn't let me near it. The doctor took one look at it and decided it needed to be lanced. Which is when they take a needle and push the pus/infection out. I asked if she could numb the area but she said the needle from the numbing needle would hurt her even more. Upon hearing the word needle my DD understandably started freaking out. She didn't numb the area and I had to hold my screaming daughter as the doctor poked and squeezed out the infection for what seemed like an hour but was probably 30 seconds? As you can imagine, this was really painful and we were not at all prepared for this. I just want to get some second opinions on if you think everything about this sequence of events was normal? |
How old is your kid?
|
DD is 5 years old |
What is your complaint or what did you want to happen? It sounds reasonable to me. Yes, it sucks to see your child in pain. |
Yes. This is called incision and drainage. While it is uncomfortable I’m betting that after I and D your child felt much better. Like popping a pimple. |
This sounds entirely normal to me- mother of a 6, 4 and 2 year old. Sometimes needles happen whether we expect them or not. |
Would giving your child warning helped her? For us, it would have just provided more time to freak out. |
What are you really asking? Are you asking if your daughter freaking out is normal? Are you asking whether the doctor refusing to numb the area with a needle is normal? The answer to both questions is yes. Your daughter was going to feel pain from a needle either way. Why poke her twice? |
NP here, seems like ice or a topical anesthetic would have helped. |
This is why it’s not a good idea to get earrings for a young child. The whole thing could have been avoided. |
+1. It’s really too young. |
I suspect she freaked out more from the experience than the pain. The doctor was right.. there was no need to give her a needle I rode rto avoid the pain of a needle.
Did you freeze her when you got her ears pierced? Do you freeze her before earring care? |
She's old enough to put up with this if she's old enough to get her ears pierced - you can't have it both ways, Op.
|
That's ridiculous. I got earrings when I was 3, after asking for a year. I never had to go to the doctor for it. And, I never threw a screaming fit at the doctor because I wasn't allowed to behave that way. I may have cried, but I stayed still and did what I was told. I had many blood tests while sitting in my father's lap crying and keeping my arm still, at age 4. |
How dd your DD manage when her ears were initially pierced? |
