UIUC - well known?

Anonymous
Is UIUC a well known school?
most of my colleagues or friends have not heard of it in Nova area.
Even a friend who went to CMU engineering did not know UIUC.
Purdue seems to be more well known than UIUC.

Your colleagues need to get out more.

Are you talking about Illinois? The fighting Illini?

For CS? World class.

Good Lord, you need to do some research.

I think it's the UC part that throws people off a bit.

OP here.
I know it is a very good school. I think UIUC is better than GaTech for computer science.
Many people seem like they do not know the school in Nova area.

A UMD computer science TA did not know UIUC.
can't believe that my friend from CMU did not know UIUC. she seems to know Purdue and UMich though.

I went there and I've never had anyone tell me that they have never heard of it. But, I normally refer to it as "The University of Illinois" or the "U of I'.

OP here.
Thank you all for your inputs.
My D is considering UIUC for undergrad.
I found it very odd that many did not know that school.

The University of Illinois is VERY well known and VERY well respected. I do not know anyone who as ever called it UIUC. I don't mean this unkindly but why are you calling it that? Perhaps if you call it by a more common name, like University of Illinois, more people will know what you are talking about!

They have a classic tee shirt with the word “Illinois” arched across the chest that is very recognizable. I agree that people might be confused by you using initials instead of the name. Just “Illinois” is fine- you don’t even need to add the city names because it’s the main campus.

when my friend did not know what UIUC was, I elaborated the school name.
her immediate reaction was if it was a state school and she never heard it as a strong engineering school.
But from now on, I will try to use the common name of school instead of abbreviation.

I with others, never heard the University of Illinois main campus in urbana-champaign referred to as UIUC, and perhaps you are thinking of the less well known University of Illinois Chicago, which is typically referred to as UIC, and is less well known but has some strong programs. The University of Illinois everyone would have heard of so long as they have heard of Illinois.

are you kidding?

Yes. Extremely well known and highly regarded. Your CMU engineering friend must be living under a rock.

Generally people refer to it as Illinois, but there are tons of times the abbreviation is used.
