> 4.0 GPA, what AP classes did your DC take?

Anonymous
I'm suffering from GPA sticker shock after looking at Naviance for our APS high school. I had been blissfully unaware of the latest GPA expectations until now. DC is a junior with a lot of intensified math and science classes but only a few APs like Calculus BC and Physics. DC scored 1500 on SATs and currently has 3.7 unweighted GPA and 3.9 W GPA. Had no idea that most schools require at least a 4.0 these days. DC wants to study engineering so I think s/he took the right classes but I'm now wondering if we missed an opportunity in boosting GPA with some AP classes like English, History, or Psychology.

If your DC has a high (>4.0) GPA, what AP classes did they take?

How many APs totally depends on what is the norm on your chold’s High school. And most colleges do not require a 4.0. Many colleges don’t look at weighted GPA at all.

But information about the senior class at your kid’s school should be available from your college counselor. This is a quick school profile (1-2 pages) that is sent to every college.

The school profile says what courses are offered, average GPA, class rank (if applicable) and average number of advanced courses (however your school determines that), 4-year graduation rate and how many students go on to college.

DC took 16 so just about every subject.

AP US history, AP Chem, AP Physics EM, AP World History, AP comp sci, AP stat and prob, AP psychology AP Calc

He also did dual enrollment at local cc, so those classes were waited - Eng 101 and 102, Bio 101, 103 and 104 (anatomy), Ethics, and Phil 101.

He graduated with a 4.6 weighted GPA

Thank you! To future posters, this is the kind of info I'd like to see. Not something generic like "every subject."

It helps you how?

DS who graduated last year from APS was not really a STEM kid, but still took AP Calc, AP Physics and AP Environmental Science. On the non-STEM side, he took AP Human Geography, AP US History, AP Macro/Micro Economics +1 other that I can't remember for the life of me. College outcomes were just fine with a little over a 4.1 weighted.

At our school, the GPAs on Naviance are the final GPAs after senior year has been completed...with more AP classes than what most juniors can accumulate. If you are comparing DC's junior year weighted GPA to seniors, you should take that into account.

APUSH, APGOV, AP PHYS 2, AP PHYS C, CALC AB, CALC BC, IB COMPSCI, INT CHEM, INT BIO, ALL INTENSIFIED 9th and 10th, NO AP ENG.

Grades were better than your child's, SATs were good, but not 1500.

Engineering freshman at an engineering school ranked in the 20s, doing just fine.

12 for a kid not into science/technology at all, plus a few dual enrollment classes senior year at a local university. Expected GPA is about 4.2 or 4.3, SAT 1500. Didn't do quite as well with college applications as child had hoped but is deciding between two highly-ranked flagships (no merit aid) and a few other places that offered a lot of merit aid.

English lang, English lit, Spanish lang, Spanish lit, human geography, world history, US history, US gov

Enviro sci, calculus, chem, stats
