| Someone mentioned head butting the ball is not allowed in certain leagues? Is this true? Would support this because of numerous concussions. |
You are everything I hate in a soccer parent. |
Almost didn't want to respond, I see/hear these on the field all of the time. SMH. It's sad, then they still complain when they know nothing about the sport. |
| No need to be so rude. Heading is not allowed at certain ages. Heading is allowed in all leagues. It is part of the game and learning to do it safely is also part of the game. When done properly, there is almost no risk of concussion because your head moves through the ball at impact and the brain keeps moving in one direction. Injury happens with bad form, like when the ball bounces off the top of the head or when the ball hits the head and causes the head and neck to snap back in response. There is no such thing as "head butting" the ball. |
You are too nice. |
| I'm almost willing to bet the head butting guy and water break guy are they same guy. His next post will be about practicing on school nights. Then games that are scheduled on Sunday mornings. |

I have come to the conclusion that the only soccer topic in in the DMV that everyone on this forum can agree on is that Muldoons Farm is the crappiest place to play soccer.
|
+1 so true! : ) |
|
Yes...agreed on Muldoon's!!
Also, I've been "head butting" my desk all morning thinking about this: I know head butting isn't a soccer thing, but what about "head banging"? Ha. Sorry - this whole thread must have started as a joke, so just playing along too. Sing along … "Bang your head. Soccer forums will drive you maaaaddd." |
The truth is, no one knows yet what the long term effects on "safely" heading the ball are. 10 years ago, tackling in football was thought to be safe as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm a soccer parent, and it's not stopping my kid from playing, but the truth is, we just don't know what the concussion risks are yet. I will say that the vast majority of concussions from soccer come from elbows/knees to the head...not from heading the ball. |
| Don't you get to karate kick the ball, too? |
| You rarely head the soccer ball repeatedly |
|
Keep in mind that the "head butting" policy will differ from to state to state. DMV leagues allow it starting at U12. I know it's a old topic, but it's far more dangerous to not allow "head butting" since most kids will either awkwardly position their body or try to high kick.
I "head butted" all my life and my brain is just enif! |
Dyslexics Untie! |
| If you're child is in a league playing at a speed and intensity where they're "head butting" to the point and accuracy where concussion is a concern, the kids in your league must be phenomonal. |
