Cs in middle school

Anonymous
My DC got DC's first C. It is in Social studies/History at Deal. I am so upset. How common are Cs in MS?

Why are you upset? Why do you think he got a C?

I tell my kid that 6th grade is a year for trying different things and figuring out what works and what doesn't work. But that lesson isn't going to be learned overnight.

Signed,
Parent of kid with learning disabilities and several Cs -- but I know he's doing his best and working hard

You seem like you are surprised -- doesn't Deal give relatively current information on grades online? You might look to see if there is a particular area in which DC is performing poorly, such as not doing or turning in homework, or tests. If you're checking regularly, the grade shouldn't be a surprise.

Do you check ASPEN? This should not be a surprise.

Mine got a D and he is not a D student in Spanish. He said he didn't do some kind of homework and it won't happen again. Spanish is back to A. Don't stress the kid out. I bet he is actually good at social studies.

DC apparently did not finish a summative. Claimed he did not have good internet connection!

A C in middle school is not a crisis.

I feel really bad for your kid.

I'm not too surprised. I check ASPEN regularly. I wondered if this grade was common.

A C is a problem if your child wants to get into private school for high school.

1 C is not. A pattern of Cs is.

Ditto on Aspen. Have a look at where that C is coming from. Is it that you child regularly gets "only" 60-so out of a 100 points or are full point assignments littered with zero-point ones, suggesting he/she does not turn work in when/where it's due? Also see there how the grade breaks down between assignments, classwork, homework, and tests. And then figure out whether it's worth fretting over and how, all the while keeping in mind that it's sometimes the teacher's fault.

I really like our school's focus on student led conferences with parents. Students are asked to analyze their grades in this way, assess whether they are good grades or have room for improvement, based on their own level and goals, and what they intend to change about relevant aspects, such as for example organizing homework differently, or doing it at a different time. You saying "oh, my God a C is bad" isn't helpful in any way. But you saying "hey, look here, I see you're doing really well on tests (clearly, you're getting it) but less well on homework, why is that?" may be.

Your child is doomed to a life of prostitution and living among the marginalized.

It’s a C! Find out if your child needs help or disliked the topic area this term. It’s one C in one term BFD! Look for patterns not outliers, OP.

Not for 1 term.
