Boy - Peeing pools in lap w/ knees closed - sprays across floor with knees open how to help?

Anonymous
He went to a preschool with a urinal and did well however he has since transferred schools and refuses to stand up to urinate. Saying he’s afraid .

He’s currently putting toilet paper in front to try to help but the struggle to calm him (He hates mess, wet floors, urine on legs) is real.

What tips can readjust him to standing or fix seating issues?

It sounds like he needs to use his hand to point himself down with legs apart.

Isn't he using his hand?

Give him Cheerios to help him aim.

What does he do at home?

How old is he?

Mine had a sturdy little step stool that they stood on to pee into the toilet until they were tall enough to not need it.

Have him point down and lean forward on the seat.

My DS has always peed sitting down. Until he got a little taller, he had to take off his pants in order to be able to spread his legs wide enough to sit far enough back on the toilet so he wouldn’t spray pee everywhere. I have no idea what a better solution is, but it was only temporary and now he doesn’t need to take pants off to pee (he’s now a tall 3.5). And if he decides to use his small potty, he can manage that all by himself without having to take off pants.

Legs apart, leaned forward, pointing his penis down towards the bowl with his hand.

No boy should grow up to be a sitzpinkler.

When they come out of diapers it is easy to transition to standing in front of the toilet. All of the brouhaha about pee everywhere notwithstanding, it is easy to hit the target too. At that age the distance between them and the water is minimal. Some even need a stool as noted because they’re not tall enough. What’s the boy afraid of? Missing the toilet? Where did he learn that? He misses, he adjusts, he finishes, maybe he wipes up the misadventure. He needs to practice at home, with no big deal about a sprinkle here or there. Where’s the father, brother, trusted male friend in all this? No kid should have to struggle with a basic bodily function because the person in charge of him doesn’t have the equipment to show him what to do.

If he is sitting down, and your first post says he refuses to stand and the new school, then he should be leaning forward a bit on the bowl and use his hand to point his penis down. DS normally stands but that is how he sits when he is pooping because he will pee at some point. No mess

Point down.

Let him sit, what is the issue?

We called it tucking - he needs to tuck his penis down and hold it there.

Lean forward, penis down.

But we also use a ring with splash guard for our little boys.
