Repeating one semester of FL in MCPS

Anonymous
Is it possible to repeat only one semester of FL - say Spanish 3A or 4B - to improve grades?

Thanks!

Yes. Do it. We regret not doing it.

OP: Thanks to all the responders! This is our first experience with HS system in the U.S. and we are still finding our way around. DC will be in HS next year.

Generally speaking, it looks like most HS courses are year long - so, what do people do to fill the other semester that does not need to be repeated? Take a semester long elective? Or, is it O.K. to leave a "hole" in the schedule?! Is it necessary to register for the maximum number of credits every semester? Thanks!

Kid can take study hall, the required half credit Health class, an extra semester of gym or there are sometimes a few electives that are only a semester instead of a year. Good luck!

Unless you are a senior with a part day schedule to allow for work or an internship, you must carry a full load. When my DD did summer school to get ahead, MCPS filled the “hole” with an elective.

What is study hall? Is this the time when students can study by themselves, catching up/doing homework/whatever?

Which MCPS do you know with Study Hall in 2019? What adult staff member is supervising it?

My only worry about repeating only one semester at this level (3 or 4) would be that the student would have many months to forget the language that she/he has worked so hard to learn. Could you find a way to supplement on the weekends? I wouldn't want for my child to forget her foreign language. If you're going to do just the one semester, I like the idea of fitting in Health. There is also the possibility of doing one semester of Tech and doing the other over the summer.

You could consider repeating the whole year to get a firmer base.

If the only purpose is to improve a grade, and credit was already earned, presumably the student could sign up for the next year at the same time, or may even be done with the language.

Blair does, I'd assume others as well, some students do it if they're taking a ninth period. Don't know how it actually works as far as staffing but I'm imagining not much different than back in the day.

I can’t even find a code for that. Are you talking about Resource class?

Most MCPS schools don't have study hall. Also, you should check into what semester only classes exist at your school. Most schools don't have a large selection.

I asked this question: I finally called and verified it exists, but they acted shocked that I knew. Is this a secret for the privileged few? Now that I know, I’m passing the word on.
