Girls Field Hockey For Grade 4 (Northern VA)

Anonymous
I'm having a tough time finding leagues for field hockey for my 4th grader. She is doing a development program now, but would like to do actual games. Is there such a thing in Arlington, Falls Church or McLean? I did a google search and found some 'landing pages' for local field hockey--but with no real info that they are active/live leagues that play games.

Saw one in Loudoun called Potomac Field Hockey--but that is too far out.

Thanks for any insight?

FPYC, SYC, Burke, and Xtreme all have programs for fourth graders and have playdates together. The FPYC kids were the most impressive in my observation.

Yes, but these are basically 6 week clinics with, maybe, 2 scrimmage dates. Unless you start looking for travel leagues, there really isn't the equivalent of FH "rec leagues" around here. We are now getting to MS age and that's where we are now.

Anyone know a development program in DC/lower Moco?

So, keep in mind that field hockey is a fall sport. McLean Field Hockey is a very good, established program that plays against Great Falls, Herndon/Reston, and I think Potomac.

Right now, there are also Spring leagues underway, but I don't think McLean is doing anything. We are in Herndon/Reston and had our first practices and games last week. You could see if Great Falls or Herndon/Reston could take a late sign-up for the Spring if that works for you.

My DD has played since 2nd grade, now in 8th. She's also done some clinics in McLean as well as Beyond Sticks camp, so there are a lot of really good programs for girl in 4th grade.

We were unimpressed when we did Beyond Sticks a few years ago. But, I've heard they have revamped how the sessions work and it's much better. But, I don't know first-hand.

What is the McLean Youth program like? Can non-residents join?

I have a 4th grade daughter in Arlington and I don't know of any girls that age who play field hockey yet. I do know one who plays ice hockey and a handful who play either lacrosse or flag football or both. (and a ton who play basketball, soccer and/or softball.) I'm not sure there's much on offer in our area for that age group. (we'd like our daughter to play at some point too.)

I assume that a lot of the kids start with soccer, some move to LAX and then eventually some of them switch to field hockey as they approach high school age.

Falls Church started two teams last fall and will do it again this year. They fall under the Falls Church Youth Lacrosse Club umbrella and play McLean, Great Falls, Herndon, etc. All their games were at Nike Field. fclaxclub.com
