DH will spend much of the summer working in Chicago, where our oldest son is a medical resident. Our two younger kids will be working in Washington, where we live, and where it is hot as Hades during the summer. I can work remotely and am thinking about renting a house for the month of July, either in Chicago or somewhere on Lake Michigan within a reasonable drive (let's say 2 hours) for the month of July, so that DH can come up for the weekends, and the kids can occasionally join us.
Chicagolanders, I'd appreciate your thoughts on the following -- 1) Is Chicago itself going to feel too hot and humid? If not, what would be a fun neighborhood to live in? 2) If not Chicago, then where on Lake Michigan should I be searching -- and what's the best way to find a house? |

1) Chicago will be hot and humid most of July and August. You can expect a lot of 85-95 degree days. But, if you live within a few blocks from the lake it can be glorious.
2) If not Chicago proper, I'd look at Evanston. |
| If you have lived in the Washington DC area, you will probably find Chicago much less humid - especially by the lake. |

Chicago has variable temperatures during the summer. It’s possible to get a series of days in the 70’s in July or August. Or we can experience a heat wave and have a heat index of 110 degrees Fahrenheit! It just depends on the year.
However, based on my limited experience of DC summers, I’d say that Chicago will feel less muggy overall, and significantly more comfortable by the lake. Try finding a place in the South Loop, Streeterville, or Gold Coast neighborhoods. There should be plenty of short term rental options. Beautiful, new, walkable neighborhoods with lots to do and no need to get in a car. All are close to museums, free outdoor concerts in Millenium Park, excellent shopping and restaurants too. Our winters may be brutal but summers in a Chicago are fantastic. |
| OP here -- I took the advice many of you offered and spent a wonderful month in Saugatuck! DH is here now and we're going to Chicago for one last weekend before heading back home. One thing we'd like to do would be to go out on a sailboat on the lake in Chicago. Any suggestions for charters? Thanks! |
Yes! DC so humid in summer. Love Chicago near lake and the summer weather!. |
