What is the appropriate action when you unintentionally block a crosswalk?

| This happened to me the other--could not see to make a right on red and needed to pull far up to see to turn safely. There were no pedestrians or cyclists anywhere in view. I had to sit a bit to make the turn safely and while I am waiting a bike shows up. I could not back up as cars were behind. Cyclist hits the trunk of my car as he goes around (he had been riding on the sidewalk). He's a douche right? |

Why is he a douche? Because he called you out on the fact that you are a selfish driver? If you could not safely make a right on red without blocking the crosswalk then wait for the light to turn green and make a right then. It is impossible to “unintentionally” block the crosswalk. If you cannot clear the crosswalk then wait until you can. It is dangerous for pedestrians to have to go around you into the street. |

No OP, you're the douche. There is never a reason for you to block a crosswalk - don't make excuses. If you could not see, you wait behind the crosswalk lines, until it's clear.
You 1000% intentionally blocked a crosswalk, though you may have unintentionally tried to impede pedestrians. Still no excuse and you are in the wrong. |

+1 I've had cars block crosswalks and then I have to wait another 7 minutes for the light to change with a baby in the stroller. It sucks. |

Sometimes intersections have poor visibility and people do what they can. The cyclist should not have bumped into your car, but honestly, how much damage can he do??? Let that go, OP. Consider it payment for having blocked the crosswalk, even though you had to. |

| I would have rolled down my window and flicked him off. There was no reason he needed to touch your vehicle. If anything, they car behind you should not have been so close to you to not leave enough room for someone to pass |

| I'm very conscious of blocking the crosswalk because it drives me crazy when other people do it, that said, there are times when traffic is moving through the crosswalk and you enter the intersection with 28 or 30 seconds left on the crosswalk sign and you get stuck because an Uber driver or some other idiot stops teh flow of traffic to let someone out of the car or just get out themselves. It always happens on 15th street when you turn from Constitution. Often it is someone with government plates or one of the Commerce Dept construction workers. Not much you can do. |

I have done that and yes there were no pedestrians around, and it was critical for me to be able to pull up and see
After a while, among came a pedestrian. I think in that case. There was still some room. I made eye contact and waved, and he went ahead. And he waved back/trusted that I would not move an inch. I make a note to not do that anymore but in that case, I really couldn’t see. I’m more annoyed by poor city planning for the position of crosswalks and visibility. |
