I LOVE Costa Rica. I stayed at the Marriott Los Suenos and it was a very nice property. I just looked the JW website and this property looks fabulous, too! I'll try this one next time we go. You'll be travelling during low season, so it won't be crowded. Keep in mind that Costa Rica is quite rustic - the beaches are dark, wet sand (you don't get the nice powder of other areas). There isn't a whole lot to do as far as nightlife goes, but there are lots of activities at either location to keep everyone happy. Tamarindo is surfer paradise and you can drive to some off the beaten path beaches to watch the surfers. It definitely has a laid back vibe to it. I don't know if there is an age limit, but your kids can take surf lessons from one of the locals. I regret not doing this last time we were there. At eiterh spot, I HIGHLY recommend doing the zipline - both your kids are old enough to do this. Defintely rent a car and if you are up to it, consider staying at both locations. The Los Suenos property is close to Manuel Antonio park that has beaches and great nature walks. If you can squeeze it in - I also recommend staying at least one night at Volcano Arenal and visiting Tabacon. Your kids will get a huge kick out of it and they may even get to see the volcano spew lava. Don't waste time staying in San Jose except maybe the night before your flight out.
